In early 2014, a producer friend of mine asked if I’d be interested in scoring a pilot TV show he was working on. The show itself was all about so-called “psychic” Derek Acorah. It was a paying gig and although I am totally against the whole talking-to-the-dead bullshit, I stupidly said yes I’d do it.
I instantly regretted that decision as soon as footage from the show started coming through. It was horrible, all I could see was Acorah mindlessly trampling all over and destroying memories of dead relatives – it was gross.
I started writing music for the show nonetheless – I was contracted to do this so I was going to be professional about it, but I struggled with my conscience, my morals, the very fact that I was taking money to write music for a show that would go on to promote this charlatan.
I was about to quit a few months in when the TV company who was interested in the show had a change of heart and cancelled the pilot – maybe they were going through a similar struggle as me. Whatever, it ended a tortuous time. Don’t get me wrong, I was disappointed from a business point of view, but I was also relieved that Acorah wouldn’t be given any screen time with my music.
